Do British people know Kansas is a U.S. state?
The Geographic middle of the United States? Like visit Dodge City, Kansas. The dirt gravel roads and old western buildings and barnyards. Middle America. You could bring British cattle and grow corn and live in endless fields of grass and smoke out and buy a gun and work in Wichita. What do British people think of the Great Plains of the United States and the honky tonk bars and the wide open spaces? The flat land East of the Rockies, between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans? What do British people think of that sparsely populated hidden land within the US? British celtic bands made it out to the middle of North America....they turned into Bluegrass and country British people could start with a banjo and fiddle and bass and a western accent and some gospel blues See picture below http://www.geocities.com/hubiestutzman/holding/ks_dodge_city.jpg Edit: Just when you think about how much people fight for land in the Middle East, how many wars were fought in Europe between nations the size of Belgium YET....here in the U.S. middle there's soooo much temperate land, THOUSANDS of kilometres of pure comfy land in a place called the Great Plains

Been all over Kansas and a few of the other midwestern states - the only thing I was atracted to was the micro breweries.

We've all seen the 'Wizard of Oz', so that's a 'yes'. Personally, I prefer to live in a country where you can travel anywhere in a day, where you can see mountains, beaches, lakes, forests, castles, palaces, ancient monuments...all in a single day, where a tornado is not going to destroy my house, where the majority of the population is not allowed to carry guns, and where bloodsports are illegal. Call me old-fashioned......but

I don't think Kansas often enters the mind of most Brits, though I'm sure any educated person will have heard of it and knows it's "somewhere in the middle" (even if most probably couldn't point to it on a map), the Great Plains and the Wizard of Oz. Probably all a bit too VAST for people accustomed to living in little islands. Nor does it have the historical connection that there is from here to New England and the East Coast in general (quite apart from temperamental and political similarities ... dare I mention the word Liberal?) nor the familiarity of Florida (vacations) or California (on the TV every day of the week.)

I've had quite a few of my Brit friends that do not know where Kansas is, and I've stayed there a while back when I was much younger. I guess it could go the same way for people over here in America. Many do not know where certain locations are in other countries and of course you are going to have people point out major cities and states because that's what is the popular "talk" or knowledge about in other areas. So I have a lot of Brits and Irish will tell me they know for the most part about the larger areas and such in America, but then again they don't seem to have a clue as places you say of Kansas. Then you have the American who knows more of the larger areas in England or Ireland and such and then they don't have a clue about the more "smaller" areas. Also I am not saying this is how it is, or all people from countries are like this or not knowledgeable about other areas and such, but a majority or a minority could be this way. Hell, I don't know much about other cities and countries as I should, I got over here in America and turned into a dumbass, but oh well. That's life I would assume.

Hey thanks for making us Americans look bad. Of course the British know Kansas is a state.

Yes. Toto and Dorothy came from Kansas. (don't worry about what 'ALAN GRAYSON FOR PRESIDENT 2012' says. Some of the airheads I work with would probably say it was a clothing shop or a boy band).

Yes, I know of every last US state. Kansas is the one smack-bang in the middle of the US.

That's a bit like saying "Do yank people know Cheshire is a UK county?" Some will, some will not. So what? There is a reason that space is empty, nobody wants to live there.
